Roundup of the Round of 16 action in 2023-24 UEFA Champions League.

Arsenal and Manchester City were the last two English representatives left in the competition but faced contrastable tests in their bids to reach the Quarter-Finals.

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan meanwhile were amongst various European giants seeking to avoid a cupset.

 

Porto 1-1 Arsenal (Arsenal win 4-2 on penalties)

Galeno struck a 94th minute winner as Porto clinically won the first leg at home, before Leandro Trossard netted a 41st minute goal in the second leg to make it 1-1 on aggregate, which sent the tie to extra time in North London where neither team found a second goal.

Arsenal’s David Raya proved the shootout hero as he denied Wendell and Galeno to secure a 4-2 win on penalties for Mikel Arteta’s Gunners, which the Spanish goalkeeper described as “an incredible feeling” post-match.

 

Napoli 2-4 Barcelona

Victor Osimhen cancelled out Robert Lewandowski’s opening goal as Napoli came from behind to snatch a 1-1 draw at home in the first leg.

Early goals from Fermin Lopez and Joao Cancelo saw Barcelona ultimately prevail 3-1 at home in the second leg and 4-2 on aggregate, as Lewandowski wrapped up their triumph after Amir Rrahmani threatened a late comeback for Napoli.

 

PSG 4-1 Real Sociedad

Kylian Mbappe and Bradley Barcola both found the net for PSG in a comfortable 2-0 opening leg win at home to Real Sociedad.

Mbappe went on to net a brace for PSG who cruised through 4-1 on aggregate with a 2-1 second leg victory, despite Mikel Merino’s late consolatory goal for the Spanish team.

 

Inter Milan 2-2 Atletico Madrid (Atletico Madrid win 3-2 on penalties)

Marko Arnautovic netted a 79th minute rebound first-leg winner to put Inter Milan 1-0 up on aggregate after their home leg.

Antoine Griezmann and Memphis Depay rescued a 2-1 second leg home victory for Atletico Madrid after Federico Dimarco had put Inter ahead, with Depay’s goal having levelled the tie 2-2 on aggregate.

Misses from Aleix Sanchez, Davy Klaassen and Lautaro Martinez in the penalty shootout saw last season’s runners-up, Inter crash out 3-2 on penalties as Atletico completed their comeback.

 

PSV Eindhoven 1-3 Borussia Dortmund

Luuk De Jong’s penalty saw PSV fight back to snatch a 1-1 first leg draw at home to Borussia Dortmund, after Donyell Malen had put the German visitors ahead with a 24th minute deflected strike.

Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus however netted clinical goals to seal a 2-0 home win for Borussia Dortmund, who progress to the Quarter-Finals with a 3-1 aggregate victory.

 

Lazio 1-3 Bayern Munich

Ciro Immobile’s 69th minute penalty saw Lazio threaten a cupset with a first leg victory at Stadio Olimpico, during which Bayern’s Dayot Upamecano was red carded for his foul on Gustav Isaksen.

Harry Kane’s second leg brace at the Allianz Arena plus Thomas Muller’s header saw the defending Bundesliga champions triumph 3-0 in the second leg to avoid a shock exit.

 

Copenhagen 2-6 Manchester City

David Silva and Phil Foden secured a 3-1 first leg win for Man City away at Parken Stadium, after Kevin De Bruyne’s 10th minute goal was cancelled out by Magnus Mattsson.

Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions ultimately confirmed their passage to the Quarter-Finals with a 3-1 home win through goals from; Manuel Akanji, Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland despite Mohamed Elyounoussi’s consolatory goal for the Danish club.

City’s two victories meant that they won 6-2 on aggregate.

 

RB Leipzig 1-2 Real Madrid 

Brahim Diaz curled in a 48th minute first leg winner for Real Madrid away at RB Leipzig, in which the hosts’ Benjamin Sesko saw a second-minute header disallowed due to Benjamin Henrichs having been offside.

Vinicius Junior’s 66th minute strike saw Real Madrid ultimately advance 2-1 on aggregate, despite Willi Orban salvaging a 1-1 second leg draw for RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabeu.
