Southampton Sign Brooks on Loan from Bournemouth

Southampton have signed midfielder, David Brooks on loan from Bournemouth until end of 2023-24 season.

Brooks’ move comes as the Wales international seeks more game time after he started just two of his 13 Premier League appearances for Bournemouth this season, during which he has scored one goal and provided one assist.

The 26 year-old midfielder however has scored in both cup competitions for Andoni Iraola’s Cherries, including their most recent match as they thrashed Swansea 5-0 in the Fourth Round – during which he created assists for Lloyd Kelly and Alex Scott before he netted their fourth goal.

Southampton consequently swooped for Brooks with promise of more game time as Wales chase qualification for UEFA Euro 2024, having qualified for March’s Qualifying Play-Offs where they play Finland in the semi-finals then Poland or Estonia if reach the Play-Off Final.

Speaking about his decision to make the loan switch to St Mary’s, Brooks is “really looking forward” to gaining more game time and a second promotion from the Championship – having done so with Bournemouth in 2021-22 season.

Brooks also praised manager, Russell Martin for his “very attractive on the eye” style of play as he credited him for his role in bringing him to the club on loan.

Southampton’s Director of Football, Jason Wilcox explained that the club had “ideally wanted a wide player,” with Brooks amongst their top names in this transfer window, so is “extremely pleased” to add him to the squad.

Wilcox also addressed what Brooks will add to the squad as he said: “He’s a very talented and dynamic player who will further increase both our quality and depth.”

Russell Martins’ Saints however won’t have an option or obligation to buy Brooks in the summer as part of his loan switch, with the midfielder instead returning to Bournemouth where he is expected to be part of their plans for next season.
