2023-24 Premier League: Week 22 – Crystal Palace vs Sheffield United

Crystal Palace entertain relegation-battling Sheffield United at Selhurst Park.

Victory could see Palace move up to 13th in the table if Fulham lose elsewhere, whilst Sheffield Utd can climb off the foot of the table into 19th position with a win.

Jordan Ayew could feature for Crystal Palace following his early return from international duty, after Ghana suffered a shock Group Stage exit at Africa Cup of Nations.

Michael Olise (thigh) and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi (hamstring) could return but Joel Ward (hamstring), Rob Holding (ankle) and Cheick Docoure (Achilles) remain absent.

Sheffield Utd could welcome Tom Davies back into contention following his recovery from a thigh injury.

Max Lowe (knock) is a doubt but Rhian Brewster (suspension), George Baldock (knock), John Egan (foot) and Chris Basham (ankle) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off?

Palace host Sheffield Utd at Selhurst Park on Tuesday 30 January at 8pm GMT, untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Crystal Palace are unbeaten in three of their last five meetings against Sheffield Utd (W3, L2).
  • Sheffield Utd have claimed four points from their last six visits to Palace (W1, D1, L4).
  • Roy Hodgson’s Eagles have kept clean sheets in four of their last five home games against Sheffield Utd.
  • Palace have scored first in two of their last three league matches at home (W1, D1, L1).
  • Sheffield Utd are winless in 11 of their last 12 league matches away from Bramall Lane (W1, D2, L9)

Prediction

Having had a week-and-a-half to mull over their defensive meltdown at Arsenal, Palace really need to reset and start finding results because they’re seriously on the cusp of getting sucked right into the relegation battle.

Sheffield Utd meanwhile seem to have found some confidence in terms of attack in their last two games but their defensive fragilities remain, as Brighton exposed ruthlessly on Saturday so more work is needed at the back if they want to mount a great escape.

A goalless draw therefore feels unlikely but if the Blades can continue to build upon their attacking positives, they really should nick this if can sort out their defence.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 1-2 Sheffield United

Result: Crystal Palace 3-2 Sheffield United
