2023-24 Premier League: Week 21a – Burnley vs Luton

Burnley host Luton Town at Turf Moor in a Premier League relegation six-pointer showdown.

Victory would see Burnley stay second-bottom but move to within two points of safety, whilst Luton can climb out of the relegation zone with a win.

Sander Berge is available for Burnley after he was suspended for their FA Cup defeat at Tottenham, having been red carded in their loss at Aston Villa in their last league outing.

Hjalmar Ekdal (knee) and Jordan Beyer (thigh) could return if match fit but Lyle Foster (foot) and Charlie Taylor (shoulder) are unlikely to feature in the matchday squad.

Luca Koleosho (knee) remains absent.

Luton will be without Jacob Brown due to suspension, although he missed their goalless draw against Bolton in the FA Cup last weekend with a knee injury.

Carlton Morris (calf) could be available but Tom Lockyer (illness), Issa Kabore (international duty), Dan Potts (hamstring), Reece Burke (thigh) and Marvelous Nakamba (knee) remain ruled out.

When is Kick-Off?

Burnley host Luton at Turf Moor in a 7:45pm GMT kick-off on Friday 12 January, live on TNT Sport 1 in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Burnley won their only previous Premier League meeting against Luton by a 2-1 result away in October 2023.
  • Luton are unbeaten in their last seven visits to Burnley (W3, D4).
  • Rob Edwards’ Hatters have kept three clean sheets in their last seven away trips to Burnley.
  • Jay Rodriguez is the only Burnley player to have scored a headed league goal this season.
  • Luton are looking to score in eight consecutive league matches for the first time since a 11-match streak between November 2022 – February 2023.

Prediction

With both teams coming into this fixture sat in the relegation zone, victory is an imperative especially for Burnley who are currently five points adrift but they have played well in their last two games if not for clinically punished defensive errors.

Luton meanwhile were unlucky to lose their last league game against Chelsea a fortnight ago because they genuinely looked energetic and full of belief that they can stay up, yet they were outclassed in the end product until it was too late despite a valiant late two goals.

I therefore do expect both clubs to be right up for this match but if Luton can build upon the positives of their last league outing and avoid defensive errors, they really should win this to put pressure back onto Everton.

Prediction: Burnley 1-2 Luton

Result: Burnley 1-1 Luton
