Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll has withdrawn from the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, following his crash in Qualifying.
Stroll suffered a huge smash at Turn 19 as the checkered flag fell in Q1 which saw his front-left tyre fly loose across the track, whilst his car spun backwards onto the track.
The Canadian subsequently reported that he is “okay” but was “frustrated” by the incident which would of seen him start 20th and last on the grid for the race.
Explaining exactly what happened in the buildup to his crash, Stroll said: “When I saw my lap wasn’t improving, I pushed really hard in the last corner to try and make up that extra time, and that’s when it went wrong.”
Aston Martin however withdrew Stroll from the race after he reported that he felt “still sore” from his Q1 crash, whilst the team faced a difficult job in repairing his car in time for the race due to the extent of damage which would of necessitated a pit-lane start.
Team Principal, Mike Krack released the following statement on behalf of the team: “The whole team are relieved that Lance was able to step out of the car after yesterday’s accident – however, he is still feeling the after-effects of such a high-impact crash.
“Our priority now is that he makes a full and speedy recovery. Together, we have decided that he will sit out this evening’s race and instead focus fully on returning to the cockpit for next weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix.”
Should Stroll be declared unfit then Felipe Drugovich or Stoffel Vandoorne will be expected to step in and replace the 24 year-old at Suzuka for the Japanese GP weekend from 22-24 September.
