Chelsea have signed midfielder, Moises Caicedo from Brighton for a British record transfer fee of £115m.
Following his exploits for Brighton last season as the Seagulls recorded their best-ever top-flight finish of sixth place to qualify for Europe, Caicedo’s future has been one of the biggest talking points of the summer as Chelsea relentlessly pursued him.
Brighton however held firm on their £100m valuation amidst attempts from Chelsea to get him for £80m, which led Liverpool to eventually swoop for the Ecuador international with a British record transfer fee of £111m in total.
Caicedo however snubbed Liverpool’s offer with his desire firmly fixed upon joining Chelsea, who subsequently submitted a £115m bid which Brighton duly accepted after exceeding their minimum transfer valuation.
The 21 year-old has signed an eight-year contract at Stamford Bridge until June 2031 with the club holding a 12-month option to extend his contract by a further year.
This transfer also made Caicedo the most expensive British transfer ever, beating the £105.6m fee Chelsea paid Benfica for Enzo Fernandez in January as well as the most expensive transfer between English clubs after Declan Rice left West Ham for Arsenal in a £100m deal last month.
Speaking about his decision to join Chelsea, Caicedo said: “I am so excited to be here at this big club and I didn’t have to think twice when Chelsea called me, I just knew I wanted to sign for the club. It’s a dream come true to be here and I can’t wait to get started with the team.”
Chelsea’s Co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley issued the following comment upon confirmeation of Caicedo’s move: “Moises possesses a rare midfield skill set and is a player we’ve been targeting for some time.
“We believe he will make a significant impact at Stamford Bridge this season – and in the years ahead.”
Brighton chairman, Tony Bloom meanwhile paid tribute to Caicedo following his move, as he said: “Moises expressed a strong desire to move on, and at that point it was crucial our valuation was met in full.
“I’d like to thank him for his exceptional performances for the club, and I wish him all the best going forward.”
Caicedo could make his debut for Chelsea away at West Ham on Sunday 20 August in a 4:30pm BST kick-off, before potentially making his home bow against Luton on Friday 25 August at 8pm, with both games live on Sky Sports.
Caicedo leaves Brighton having scored twice in 53 appearances since he joined from Independiente del Valle in February 2021, although he had to wait a year before he made his senior debut for the Seagulls.
