PHM Racing have replaced Brad Benavides with Josh Mason for the 2023 F2 Belgian round.
Benavides’ omission is unexplained after failing to score in 18 races this season, with a season best finish of 10th place in the 2023 Azerbaijan Sprint Race.
PHM Racing have therefore named Great Britain’s Mason as Benavides’ replacement for the Belgian round, which takes place this weekend with Practice and Qualifying being held tomorrow (28 July).
“It’s a mix of emotions – excited, nervous and all the emotions are flowing through,” commented Mason on his unexpected call-up for this weekend at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
The 21 year-old however is aware of the challenge that lies ahead as he added: “To jump into Formula 2 around Spa in the wet means there’s quite a lot being thrown at me, but I’m looking forward to get started with PHM Racing by Charouz.”
Charouz Team Principal, Bob Vavrik added that the team “are happy to welcome” Mason to the team, and echoed Mason’s thoughts on the task ahead, as he said: “It will be a tough wet weekend for him as a rookie driver and the team in the current condition at this track.
“We are going through the whole process to prepare the driver for such a big step to FIA Formula 2.”
Mason currently races in EuroFormula where he has taken one win and two further podium finishes and currently sits fifth in the Championship, having raced in the category since 2021 where he finished ninth in his debut season before improving to fifth last season.
