England Announce 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Squad Numbers

England have announced squad numbers for 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses head into the Women’s World Cup as European champions, but will only have 23 players for the tournament after FIFA dismissed calls for 26-player squads.

As first-choice goalkeeper, Mary Earps will wear the number 1 shirt with her fellow goalkeepers, Hannah Hampton and Ellie Roebuck allocated shirt numbers 13 and 21 respectively.

Millie Bright will wear the number 6 shirt as captain in absence of Leah Williamson who misses out with an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury (ACL), which she suffered in mid-April playing for Arsenal away in a defeat to Manchester United in Women’s Super League (WSL).

Lucy Bronze will wear her famous number two shirt whilst Niamh Charles, Alex Greenwood, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Esme Morgan and Jess Carter have been allocated the following shirt numbers; 3, 5, 14, 15 and 16 respectively.

In midfield, Keira Walsh has retained her number four shirt whilst Georgia Stanway has taken Williamson’s vacant number eight shirt, with Ella Toone picking up Stanway’s shirt number 10.

Jordan Nobbs, Laura Coombs and Katie Zelem will wear the respective shirt numbers; 12, 17 and 20 for their debut World Cup appearances.

Up front, Rachel Daly will wear the number nine shirt as she prepares to lead England’s attack, having previously been utilised as a left-back at the UEFA Women’s Euros last summer whilst the number nine shirt had been worn by Ellen White who retired following the tournament’s finish.

Lauren Hemp has retained her number 11 shirt from that tournament and likewise for Chloe Kelly, Bethany England and Alessia Russo, who will once again wear the number 18, 19 and 23 shirts respectively.

Lauren James will wear the number seven shirt in place of Beth Mead, who has been left out of the squad on fitness grounds, having missed much of the season with an ACL injury suffered in November 2022 in Arsenal’s WSL defeat at home to Man Utd.

World Cup debutant, Katie Robinson will wear the number 22 shirt which had previously been worn by Wubben-Moy.

England are in Group D at the Women’s World Cup with their games all held within Australia, which one of two co-host nations alongside New Zealand.

Wiegman’s Lionesses kick off their World Cup campaign on Saturday 22 July against Haiti in Brisbane live on ITV1 in the UK, before facing Denmark and China in Sydney and Adelaide on Friday 28 July and 1 August on ITV1 and BBC One respectively.
