Right-back, Matt Lowton has announced that he will leave Burnley upon expiry of his contract in June 2023.

Lowton joined Burnley in July 2015 from Aston Villa and has gone on to score three goals in 203 appearances, during which he helped the club to two promotions from Championship to Premier League as champions in 2015-16 and 202-23 seasons respectively.

The 33 year-old also was part of the squad which finished seventh in 2017-18 Premier League, which ensured qualifcation for the following season’s UEFA Europa League – during which Lowton made two appearances as the Clarets exited at the Play-Off Stage against Olympiacos.

Following confirmation of Lowton’s exit, he commented: “It’s just a huge thank you to everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I’m glad we’ve had so much success and that we’ve brought the fans down to Turf Moor every week in their numbers.

“If you’re from Burnley – you’re a massive Burnley fan. It means so much to the town and with the culture here I grasped that straight away. The fans have been great with me and my family over the years and I was happy to repay them. Hopefully I did on the pitch by giving them 100%.”

Lowton also acknowledged how “unbelievable” this season has been under Vincent Kompany despite spending the second-half of season on loan at Huddersfield, as the club dominated the second-tier, and iterated that he hopes to “be coming back and watching them in the future.”

Addressing the club’s future under Kompany, Lowton added: “I hope it goes from strength to strength because the love I have for this club – I can’t really put it into words.”

Burnley meanwhile issued the following statement paying tribute to Lowton, in which they said: ‘Everyone at Burnley Football Club send gratitude and thanks to Matt for the contribution he’s made – wishing him and his family all best for the future.’
