2022-23 Premier League: Week 36 – Manchester United vs Wolves

Manchester United continue their top-four push against Wolves at Old Trafford.

Victory would see Man Utd go third if Newcastle lose in the lunchtime kick-off at Leeds, whilst Wolves can go 11th if Chelsea and Crystal Palace both lose elsewhere.

Marcus Rashford is a doubt for Man Utd after suffering a leg injury, despite completing the entirety of Utd’s defeat at West Ham last weekend.

Tom Heaton (ankle), Phil Jones, Donny van de Beek (both knee), Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane (both foot), Scott McTominay (knock) and Mason Greenwood (personal) remain absent.

Wolves could welcome Boubacar Traore back into contention after carefully managing his return to full fitness from a groin injury.

Chiquinho and Sasa Kalajdzic (both knee) remain absent.

When is Kick-Off

Man Utd meet Wolves in a 3pm BST kick-off at Old Trafford on Saturday 13 May, albeit untelevised live in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Man Utd are unbeaten in six of their last seven meetings against Wolves (W4, D2, L1).
  • Wolves have claimed five points from their last five visits to Man Utd (W1, D2, L2).
  • Each of last three meetings between Man Utd and Wolves have finished 1-0, with the team playing away winning on all three occasions – Utd won twice to Wolves’ one win.
  • No team has scored more league goals on the counter-attack this season than Man Utd (9).
  • 12 of Wolves’ 30 league goals have been scored by the Portuguese dup of Daniel Podence and Ruben Neves, who have scored six goals apiece.

Prediction

Having laboured to a narrow defeat at West Ham, Man Utd now can’t afford any more slip-ups despite having one game in hand if want a top-four finish with Liverpool now on their heels.

Erik Ten Hag though will be most disappointed with how wasteful his Red Devils were in their end product despite showing some decent pace and movement on the attack, whilst David De Gea’s fumble has to raise serious questions about whether he needs dropping to the bench for this game.

Wolves meanwhile edged past Aston Villa with a clinical early winner from a corner-kick but they can come here with confidence, having shown fantastic attacking intensity and pressing whilst their defending was extremely solid in a strong response to their mauling at Brighton two weeks ago.

Julen Lopetegui’s Wolves though are winless in nine of their ten away trips in all competitions since the turn of 2023, so they will need a huge performance if they’re going to get a result here but Utd will be an easier proposition to face if Rashford is absent.

Utd though should have enough quality to scrape a win but Wolves could well give them a tough game if the team that beat Villa turn up, rather than the side which defensively was atrocious at Brighton.

Prediction: Manchester United 1-0 Wolves

Result: Manchester United 2-0 Wolves
