England have named their Men’s Under-20s squad for 2023 FIFA Men’s U20s World Cup.
In goal, Brentford’s Matthew Cox is the only goalkeeper retained from March’s fixtures against Germany, USA and France, following another impressive season for the London-born youngster at Brentford.
Harvey Davies and Owen Goodman meanwhile have both been dropped in favour of Brighton’s James Beadle and Chelsea’s Teddy Sharman-Lowe, with the latter returning to the squad after injury forced him to withdraw from last September’s international fixtures.
Beadle meanwhile is stepping up to the Under-20s rank for the first time after an impressive campaign for Brighton, during which he progressed into England’s Under-19s squad last September and enjoyed a positive loan spell at League Two’s Crewe Alexandra.
In defence, manager – Ian Foster could be without Callum Doyle, Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Ronnie Edwards, if Coventry and Peterborough reach the Championship and League One Play-Off Finals respectively, with the trio set to link up with the squad after their domestic club duties finish.
Bashir Humphreys, Jarrel Quansah and Daniel Oyegeke meanwhile have also retained their places in the squad, alongside Imari Samuels who has been promoted into the U20s squad following a strong season for the Seagulls in Premier League 2.
Foster has named a star-studded midfield with Chelsea youngster, Carney Chukwuemeka heading a strong line-up containing Alfie Devine, Sam Edozie, Darko Gyabi and Harvey Vale, whilst Bristol City’s Alex Scott is also named in the squad.
Aaron Ramsey meanwhile is also in midfield but will join up with the squad once Middlesbrough complete their Championship play-off campaign, which sees Boro face Doyle and Norton-Cuffy’s Coventry in the semi-finals.
Foster consequently will have to make do without one if not two of; Ramsey, Doyle and Norton-Cuffy for their opening group match against Tunisia, depending upon which of Middlesbrough or Coventry reach the Championship Play-Off Final.
Juventus’ Samuel Iling-Junior and QPR’s Tim Iroegbunam meanwhile have been dropped from the squad, having featured in March’s international fixtures.
Up front, Sheffield United’s Daniel Jebbison heads the forward selection after enjoying a strong campaign, in which he helped the Blades secure promotion to the Premier League and reach this season’s FA Cup semi-finals – where Manchester City ended their cup dreams.
Man City’s Liam Delap is also named in the squad despite enduring a tricky campaign with loan spells at Championship’s Stoke City then Preston North End, where he managed four goals in 37 appearances.
Dane Scarlett has retained his spot following a positive campaign on loan at Portsmouth, where he managed six goals despite the League One club missing out on the League One play-offs.
Leeds’ Mateo Joseph completes the forward line-up as Jamie Bynoe-Gittens misses out, despite scoring three goals in 20 appearances for Borussia Dortmund this season.
England kick off their U20s campaign – which takes place in Argentina – against Tunisia on Monday 22 May, before facing Uruguay on Thursday 25 May prior to their final group match against Iraq on Sunday 27 May, with all matches kicking off at 7pm BST UK Time.
