2022-23 Sky Bet Championship: Week 44 – Wednesday

Sheffield United look to seal automatic promotion in a rearranged Championship clash against West Bromwich Albion at Bramall Lane.

Victory would see Paul Heckingbottom’s Blades secure promotion back to the Premier League, whilst West Brom could climb into the play-off spots with a win.

Sheffield Utd have no fresh injury concerns to report as Tommy Doyle and James McAtee look to return, having been ineligble to feature in Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final exit against Manchester City.

Jack O’Connell (fitness), Rhys Norrington-Davies, Ben Osborn and Rhian Brewster (all hamstring) remain ruled out.

West Brom have no fresh injury concerns to report after Sunday’s 2-1 home loss to Sunderland.

Nathaniel Chalobah (ankle), Kean Bryan, Dara O’Shea, Martin Kelly (all knee), Grady Diagana (foot), Adam Reach, Matt Phillips (quad) and Daryl Dike (Achilles) remain ruled out.

When is Kick-Off?

Sheffield Utd host West Brom in a 8pm BST kick-off at Bramall Lane on Wednesday 26 April, live on Sky Sports in UK.

Stat Attack

  • Sheffield Utd have won three of their last five league meetings against West Brom (W3, L2).
  • West Brom have won just one of their last five visits to Sheffield Utd (W1, D1, L3).
  • Sheffield Utd have scored twice in each of their last two home games against West Brom (W2).
  • James McAtee is yet to score in three consecutive appearances for Sheffield Utd this season.
  • West Brom are looking to score at least twice in three consecutive away games for the first time since February 2020 (W3).

Prediction

Paul Heckingbottom’s Blades should be proud of their admirable FA Cup run which included a brave semi-final performance against Man City, where they admirably took the game to their superior oppsition but three defensive blunders proved the difference.

Nevertheless that performance was one of valuable lessons which I do hope will be quickly put into practice here, especially given that they can seal promotion with a win on home turf in front of what will be a hopefully electric crowd atmosphere.

West Brom meanwhile need victory for their own cause given how tight the play-off race is because their final two matches against Norwich and Swansea will be tough, so it is imperative that they get at least one point here despite their poor form at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield Utd though do look like they should be too strong if can avoid the wasteful finishing which was on show against City, because this game does feel like another home win if they can play the game and not the occasion.

Prediction: Sheffield United 2-1 WBA

Result: Sheffield United 2-0 WBA
