Brentford defender, Pontus Jansson is “likely” to miss remainder of 2022-23 season with a hamstring injury.

Jansson was substituted in the 16th minute of Brentford’s 2-1 defeat to Newcastle last weekend with a hamstring injury, with manager, Thomas Frank unsure initially of the seriousness of Jansson’s injury despite feeling “gutted” at losing his captain in an injury-hit campaign for the Swedish defender.

“It’s a hamstring injury that will most likely keep him out for the rest of the season,” revealed Frank at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Bees’ trip to Wolves.

Frank though has refused to rule out a return for Jansson in late May for Brentford’s final league games of the season as he added: “It’s bad news for us and for Pontus. There’s a small chance [he returns], but it’s a big one unfortunately.

“I would prefer to have Pontus, no doubt about that. He’s our captain and a very important player for us. It’s a setback, but it is what it is, and we have to deal with it.”

Frank also acknowledged that Molineux will be “a very difficult place,” to visit after Wolves defeated Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea in recent months.

On what he is anticipating in terms of opposition, Frank admitted that Wolves “look very stable,” with “some top players” like Matheus Nunes and Daniel Podence available for selection.

Frank also praised their midfield and winger tactics as he added: “They are very fluid and I like the rotation they have with their two or three midfielders, depending on how Lopetegui is doing it. They have wingers who come inside.”

Acknowledging that Wolves can’t be written off despite being in a relegation scrap, Frank concluded: “They are playing with bigger intensity now than earlier in the season. It’s a team that, on their day, can beat anyone.”
