Bayern Munich have sacked Head Coach, Julian Nagelsmann and appointed Thomas Tuchel as his replacement.

Nagelsmann’s departure comes with Bayern sat in second place and one point off Bundesliga leaders, Borussia Dortmund, plus currently still remain in DFB-Pokal and Champions League competitions.

Bayern CEO, Oliver Kahn explained that the decision to part company with Nagelsmann was purely down to squad quality and performance, having shared the same competitive goals since the 35 year-old’s appointment in July 2021.

Issuing a statement on Nagelsmann’s departure, Khan commented: “Julian shares our aspiration to play successful and attractive football. But now we have come to the conclusion that the quality in our squad – despite the Bundesliga title last year – has come to the fore less and less often.

“After the World Cup we have played less successfully and less attractively. The big fluctuations in performance have cast doubt on our goals for this season, but also our goals for the future. That is why we have acted now.

“Personally and on behalf of FC Bayern, I would like to thank Julian and his coaching team, and wish everyone the best of luck for the future.”

Bayern Sporting Director, Hasan Salihamidzic added that sacking Nagelsmann was a “difficult decision” to take, having formed “an open, trusting, friendly relationship with Julian from day one.”

Nagelsmann’s coaching staff consisting of; Dino Toppmöller, Benjamin Glück and Xaver Zembrod have also been relieved of their duties with immediate effect.

Kahn has swooped quickly to appoint Nagelsmann’s replacement, having appointed Thomas Tuchel as Bayern’s new Head Coach until June 2025, marking the German’s return to the Bundesliga after a six-year absence following his departure from Borussia Dortmund in May 2017.

Tuchel will take charge of first-team training from Monday 27 March ahead of his first match in charge on 1 April, which sees Bayern face title rivals and Tuchel’s former team, Borussia Dortmund in a blockbuster showdown at Allianz Arena.
