2022-23 FA Cup: Quarter-Finals – Brighton vs Grimsby

Brighton & Hove Albion look to avoid suffering a Quarter-Final cupset against Grimsby Town at the AMEX Stadium in 2022-23 FA Cup.

Victory would see Brighton claim a second semi-final spot in five seasons, whilst Grimsby are looking to reach the last four for the first time since 1938-39 season.

Tariq Lamptey is ruled out for Brighton after he missed their midweek win against Crystal Palace with a knee injury.

Adam Lallana (hamstring) and Jakob Moder (knee) remain absent.

Grimsby have no fresh injury concerns to report after their League Two win at Sutton in midweek.

Owen Gallacher remains absent with a calf injury.

When is Kick-Off?

Brighton host Grimsby at AMEX Stadium at 2:15pm GMT on Sunday 19 March, live on BBC One in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Brighton won their only previous FA Cup tie against Grimsby in January 1930 (W1, D1), albeit 1-0 in a replay after the original tie finished 1-1.
  • Grimsby drew 1-1 in their only previous FA Cup visit to Brighton in January 1930, although this will be their first specific visit to the Seagulls’ current home ground – AMEX Stadium.
  • Brighton scored first in two of their three FA Cup ties this season (W3), except when they came from behind to beat Liverpool in the Fourth Round.
  • Grimsby have conceded in each of their three FA Cup ties away from home this season (W2, D1), during which they scored six goals and conceded four goals.

Prediction

Despite not matching their usual high standards of this season in their midweek win against Palace, Brighton still snatched the win which underlines how dangerous these Seagulls can get – even if have to knuckle down and play the long clinical game when not firing on all attacking cylinders.

Grimsby though will hold no fear as underdogs who have already eliminated five teams above them in their cup run, but I do feel like they’re going to have to replicate their disciplined defending and score first if want any chance of causing a cupset.

Grimsby’s manager – Paul Hirst though is probably correct in describing Brighton’s performances as “an 18 certificate”, because Roberto De Zerbi’s Seagulls have that aggressive attacking intensity and goalscoring threats amidst their habit of leaking goals at the back.

Now if the Mariners can clinically exploit that vulnerability in Brighton’s play, I would give them a chance but I just can’t see Brighton suffering a cupset given their home form this season.

Prediction: Brighton 3-1 Grimsby

Result: Brighton 5-0 Grimsby
