Manchester City moved top of the Premier League in a dramatic matchweek which saw one manager dismissed after just three months in charge.

Arsenal’s winless run in all competitions extended to three matches at the weekend, after Leandro Trossard’s strike was controversially cancelled out by Ivan Toney’s offside equaliser in a 1-1 draw at the weekend.

Manchester City consequently pounced upon the Gunners’ slip-up to cut their title deficit down to three points in a 3-1 home win over Aston Villa, courtesy of first-half goals from Rodri, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez despite Ollie Watkins’ 61st minute consolatory goal for Villa.

Second-half goals from Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland however secured Man City a 3-1 midweek win at Arsenal to move top on goal difference, after Bukayo Saka had cancelled out Kevin De Bruyne’s opening goal.

Manchester United remain third after late second-half goals from Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho saw off Leeds United at Elland Road.

Newcastle round out the top four with their third consecutive league draw after they fought back to draw 1-1 at second-bottom Bournemouth, as Miguel Almiron cancelled out Marcos Senesi’s effort in the first half.

Down in the relegation zone, Southampton sacked manager, Nathan Jones after Jan Bednarek’s own goal and Joao Gomes’ strike saw the Saints blow their lead to lose 2-1 at home to ten-men Wolves, in a game where Mario Lemina was red carded for aggressive moans after Carlos Alcaraz’ opener.

Everton remain third-bottom after goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo saw Liverpool cruise to a 2-0 home win in the Merseyside derby at Anfield.

West Ham moved two points clear of the drop after Emerson Palmieri scored against his former team to earn the Hammers a 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea, having initially fallen behind to Joao Felix’s 16th minute goal for Graham Potter’s Blues.

Elsewhere, James Maddison and Kelechi Iheanacho both provided a goal and assist as Leicester came from behind to stun fifth-placed Tottenham 4-1 at the King Power Stadium, with Nampalys Mendy and Harvey Barnes also on the scoresheet for the Foxes after Rodrigo Bentancur put Spurs ahead.

Goals from Willian and Manor Solomon saw Fulham defeat Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Craven Cottage, which saw the Cottagers climb to seventh.

Finally, Brighton clung onto sixth by virtue of goal difference after Solly March’s 63rd minute strike was cancelled out by James Tomkins in a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.
