2026-27 UEFA Champions League: League Phase – Man Utd vs AS Roma

Manchester United look to reignite their league phase campaign against AS Roma in the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League.

Victory could lift Man Utd back into the top 16 and into the seeded knockout positions, whilst Roma can potentially climb into the top eight with a win.

Team News

Lisandro Martinez is available for Man Utd because his one-match ban is only applied domestically, having been red carded in their 2-0 Premier League defeat at Chelsea on Halloween.

Marcus Rashford remains doubtful due to an ongoing hip injury.

Benjamin Sesko (shin), Luke Shaw (unspecified), Patrick Dorgu (hamstring) and Manuel Ugarte (knee) are still absent.

Roma could be without Paulo Dybala after he missed their 5-2 Serie A victory at Udinese due to a calf injury.

Mile Svilar (toe), Lorenzo Pellegrini and Manu Kone (both hamstring) are ruled out.

When is Kick-Off?

Man Utd host Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday 3 November at 8pm GMT, live on Amazon Prime in the UK.

Stat Attack

  • Man Utd have lost just one of their six previous Champions League meetings against AS Roma (W4, D1, L1).
  • AS Roma have lost all three previous Champions League visits to Man Utd at Old Trafford (L3).
  • Utd have won each of their last two home games against AS Roma by 1-0 results respectively.
  • Utd’s five goals in this season’s league phase have been scored by five different goalscorers: Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko, Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee.
  • Donyell Malen has scored three goals in Roma’s last two league phase matches (W1, L1).

Prediction

Without victory in nine matches and having lost each of their three games during which they conceded nine goals and scored just once, Man Utd really need to pull together a huge performance to at least satisfy home fans because they need to stop the rot before the international break.

Michael Carrick though should take heart from the fact that his team put up more of a fight and limited Chelsea to just one goal from open play, which is considerably better than some of their recent performances but they really need to tighten up defensively and be more clinical.

Roma though will be sniffing blood because this is their best opportunity at claiming a first win at Old Trafford and after a ruthless five-goal display at Udinese, they surely have to be favourites but they haven’t exactly been consistent in terms of results in this competition so far this season.

Although I genuinely wouldn’t be shocked if Utd turn up and put in a rare high-quality win given Roma’s Champions League hoodoo at Old Trafford, I do think Roma will take this rare chance at a win over United if can get the hosts’ fragile defence under pressure.

Prediction: Man Utd 1-3 AS Roma
