Liverpool have signed forward, Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in a £37m transfer deal.
Gakpo will officially complete his move when the January transfer window officially opens on New Year’s Day 2023, with Liverpool paying £37m plus add-ons for the 23 year-old forward who has scored nine goals and provided 12 assists in 14 matches this season for PSV.
This move will also see Gakpo reunite with his fellow Dutch international, Virgil van Dijk after recently playing together at the World Cup for the Netherlands, where Gakpo scored three goals in five appearances as the Dutch lost to Argentina in the Quarter-Finals on penalties.
Speaking to liverpoolfc.com about his move on a four-and-a-half year contract until June 2028, Gakpo commented: “I feel really good, I’m really excited to be here. I’m looking forward to start training and start playing for this amazing club.”
On what it means to join Liverpool after previously being linked to Manchester United, Leeds and Southampton in the summer, Gakpo added: “I think this is a great club for me to come in and try to show what I can [do] and try to help the team to achieve more beautiful moments that they already did in the past years.”
Gakpo also expressed a wish to “develop” his game on Merseyside alongside top-quality players like Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah.
Manager, Jurgen Klopp added that signing Gakpo is a “fantastic” move for the club and hopes that the Dutchman has “a really bright future with us.”
Klopp also praised Gakpo for his performances at PSV as he added: “There is a lot to like about Cody. He is still only 23 years old but he already has a lot of experience.
“He was the captain of PSV, he was the Player of the Year in Holland last season and, as a lot of people have just seen, he also had a great World Cup with his national team.”
Klopp however iterated that at 23 years-old, Gakpo has “potential” to grow further into a world-class forward with his “versatile” plus “smart” football skills.
Liverpool have confirmed that Gakpo will wear the number 18 shirt and could make his debut away to Brentford in the Premier League on Monday 2 January, live on Sky Sports.
