Andreas Seidl has resigned as Team Principal of McLaren to complete a move to Alfa Romeo.
Seidl first joined McLaren in 2019 after a nine-year absence following BMW’s withdrawl from the Sauber team – despite having remained as part of Sauber’s overall title name for 2010 season.
During his time at McLaren, Seidl has led the team to one race victory – in an one-two finish at 2021 Italian Grand Prix – and eight further podium finishes, but has now decided to move on and take up the same position at Alfa Romeo next season.
Speaking about his decision to move on, Seidl praised McLaren for their support whilst applauding their progress under his tenure, as he commented: “The team is on a great trajectory, and I would like to thank everyone for their support, trust and commitment.
“Thanks to Zak and the shareholders for their understanding of my personal decision to move on to another challenge. I wish Andrea and the team all the best for the future.”
Seidl also described that Italian GP win as his favourite moment as he added: “We have achieved some good results, and I will always have fond memories, with Monza being a personal and career highlight.”
On his new adventures at Alfa Romeo as CEO, Seidl described his move as “great” whilst iterating that the team will have “ambitious goals” to achieve next season.
McLaren have acted swiftly and appointed Andrea Stella as Seidl’s replacement as Team Principal in a promotion from his current role, as Executive Director.
Addressing his promotion, Stella said: “I feel privileged to take on the Team Principal role as the next stage of being part of the McLaren F1 Team.
I am grateful to Zak and the Shareholders for their trust in me and to all my colleagues and those who have supported me throughout my F1 career.”
Stella also spoke about their task in returning McLaren to winning ways as he continued: “We are realistic about the amount of work ahead of us to move back up the grid, but I am excited and encouraged that I am in this journey together with a team full of talent, experience, racing spirit and dedication.”
