Huddersfield Town have appointed Mark Fotheringham as their new Head Coach on a three-year contract.

Fotheringham’s arrival comes just two weeks after Danny Schofield was sacked following a disastrous start to the season, with Huddersfield sat second-bottom of the Championship with seven points from nine matches.

Fotheringham has previously coached in German football, where he guided FC Ingolstadt 04 to promotion to 2. Bundesliga, before he guided Hertha Berlin to Bundesliga survival as assistant to Felix Magath last season and has already taken first-team training at Huddersfield.

Huddersfield’s Head Of Football, Leigh Bromby issued a public statement on Fotheringham’s appointment as Head Coach, in which he iterated that Fotheringham was “first choice” after their initial meeting despite having “explored a wide range of options” in terms of candidates.

Explaining why Fotheringham was selected to succeed Schofield, Bromby commented: “His beliefs in coaching and football fit very well with our methods at the Club, and we also believe he can also add to what we do because of who he has worked for and with during his career so far.”

Bromby also revealed what playing style fans can expect from Fotheringham as he added: “He believes in an aggressive, intense, front-foot style of play, just as we do. That was vitally important.”

Explaining other factors which prompted their decision to name Fotheringham as the Terriers’ new Head Coach, Bromby said: “The ability to lead and motivate our squad and staff was also high on the requirements for this appointment, and they are qualities that Mark exudes naturally.

“You feel it when you meet him, and that is backed up by the testimony of many big names in football who he’s worked with, both alongside him as a coach and as a player under him.”

Bromby concluded by urging supporters to provide Fotheringham and his coaching team with full support, as the club looks to avoid relegation to League One just one season after they missed out on promotion in last season’s Play-Off Final.

Fotheringham will make his debut as Huddersfield’s Head Coach away to Reading on Saturday 1 October at 3pm BST, with his first home match at John Smith’s Stadium taking place against Hull on Sunday 9 October in a 12pm BST kick-off.
