Manchester United Sign Martin Dubravka On Season-Long Loan From Newcastle

Manchester United have signed goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka on a season-long loan from Newcastle United.

Dubravka’s move to Old Trafford comes after he fell to third-choice in Newcastle’s goalkeeping order following Nick Pope’s arrival this summer, with Pope having established himself as first-choice ahead of Karl Darlow – who played in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup win at Tranmere – and Dubravka.

Newcastle have consequently decided to accept a loan offer from Man Utd for the 33 year-old Slovakia international, who alongside Tom Heaton will provide serious competition for an under-pressure David De Gea who has conceded seven goals in four appearances this season.

Speaking about his season-long loan move to Old Trafford, Dubravka commented: “To be joining Manchester United is a special moment in my career and I can’t wait to get started, and help the group achieve its ambitions.”

Dubravka also acknowledged that he faces tough competition for a starting spot as he continued: “I am joining an excellent group of goalkeepers with lots of experience in the Premier League, and I know that we will push and support each other to keep our standards at the highest levels.

“The chance to work with David De Gea, alongside Tom Heaton, is one that I am relishing.”

Having made 130 appearances for Newcastle across the last five seasons, Dubravka also acknowledged his time at the club as he added: “I’d like to sincerely thank everyone at Newcastle United, and especially the fans, for many great experiences over the past four and a half years.

“I enjoyed every minute of my time there and made amazing memories to look back on.

“My focus is now on helping Manchester United, and we’ll see what the future holds after I have given my all this season. I am excited to be here!”

Utd’s Director of Football, John Murtough added: ““Martin has proven himself to be a top Premier League goalkeeper and his experience and personality will be a great addition to our strong goalkeeping group, alongside David, Tom, and our younger keepers.

“Together, they will create a high-performance environment, with each of them ready to step up and play when called upon.”

As part of the loan deal, United will have a non-mandatory option to sign Dubravka on a permanent transfer for £5m, meaning that the 33 year-old could return to Newcastle at end of season if his stint at Old Trafford doesn’t prove successful.

Dubravka is likely to be second-choice at United and could make his debut in their home match against Arsenal live on Sky Sports on Sunday 3 September at 4:30pm BST, although he is more likely to feature in Europa League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup unless De Gea is injured.
