Wolves have signed midfielder Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon for a £42.1 million transfer fee.
Nunes’ move comes after he enjoyed three successful seasons with Sporting in which he scored eight goals in 101 appearances across all competitions, during which he helped the Portuguese club to 2020-21 Primera Liga title plus Taca da Liga titles in last two seasons.
The 23 year-old attacking midfielder was also part of Sporting’s Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira title winning squad last season.
Wolves will pay an initial fee of £37.9m plus £4.2m in add-ons for Nunes who has signed a five-year contract at Molineux until June 2027.
Speaking about the decision to sign Nunes, Wolves’ Chairman, Jeff Shi said: “We are very happy to welcome Matheus to Wolverhampton, and delighted to add another exciting young talent to Bruno’s squad.
“Matheus has had two excellent seasons at the top level in Portugal with Sporting and is widely regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in world football, so we are thrilled that he has chosen the Premier League and Wolves as the next step in what we hope will be a fantastic career.”
Nunes began his career at G.D.U Ericeirense where he graduated through their youth academy to eventually score two goals in 13 senior appearances, before he spent 2018-19 season at Estoril in which he only managed eight appearances without finding the net.
The 23 year-old midfielder is eligible to represent Brazil internationally but chose to play for Portugal last summer, of which he has gone on to score one goal in eight appearances since he made his international debut in October 2021 in a 3-0 friendly win over Qatar.
Nunes will be available for his Wolves debut away at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday 20 August live on BT Sport in a 12:30pm BST kick-off.
