Eddie Nketiah has signed a new five-year contract to stay at Arsenal until June 2027.
Nketiah was set to be out of contract at Arsenal this summer upon expiration of his contract on 30 June but has now decided to remain at the club, following rejections of various offers made by several Bundesliga and Premier League clubs in recent months.
The 23 year-old striker has so far scored 23 goals in 92 appearances since he made his senior debut for Arsenal during 2017-18 pre-season, with his competitive debut coming as a 89th minute substitute against BATE Borisov in September 2017 in the UEFA Europa League.
Nketiah however has struggled for regular game time across the last five seasons and enjoyed a loan spell at Leeds in the second-half of 2019-20 season, which served as a springboard as he netted 16 goals in 56 appearances on his return to Arsenal over the last two seasons.
Manager, Mikel Arteta has spoken of feeling “delighted” at retaining Nketiah’s services as he said: “He represents what we are all about and all the values of the club.
“We are very happy that he has extended his contract and now we have to get to work and continue to develop the great talent and person that we have in him.”
Arsenal’s Technical Director, Edu added that Nketiah’s decision to stay at the club demonstrates that youth will be key to the club’s progress in coming seasons as he added: “The foundations of this squad are built on young talent and in particular those who have come through our Academy system.”
Edu also praised the 23 year-old for showing “attitude as well as the ability to become a top player”, having been previously released by Chelsea in 2015 and iterated that his new contract marks “… an important part of our squad planning for next season and we’re all delighted.”
Nketiah will now wear the number 14 shirt from next season, having previously worn the number 30 shirt in recent seasons.
