Ralf Rangnick Appointed Austria Manager But Stays as Man Utd Consultant

Ralf Rangnick has been appointed manager of Austria National Men’s Football Team but will stay at Manchester United as a consultant.

Rangnick replaced Ole Gunnar-Solskjaer in late November at Man Utd as interim manager until end of this season, when he will take up a consultancy role at the club with Erik Ten Haag joining as the Red Devils’ new permanent manager.

The 63 year-old German will now take up a new managerial role as manager of Austria’s National Men’s Football Team, which he will start at end of May 2022 ahead of Austria’s UEFA Nations League campaign which commences in June.

Speaking about the opportunity to become a National Team manager for the very first time as he looks to guide Austria to UEFA Euro 2024 hosted by his home country – Germany, Rangnick said: “It is an honor for me to take on the role of team principal.”

“I am particularly excited about the prospect of contesting the European Championship in Germany with a young, success-hungry team,” continued Rangnick.

Rangnick will also stay on at Old Trafford as a consultant and insists that he is “really looking forward to playing my part in helping United become a real force again.

Austrian FA President, Gerhard Milletich added that he was “very pleased” to appoint Rangnick as Austria’s new manager, following their decision to sack Rangnick’s compatriot – Franco Foda at end of March after the team failed to qualify for 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Milletich also iterated that Rangnick “is the ideal man” to guide Austria forward into the future with his footballing philosophy.

Austria Sporting Director, Peter Schöttel added that Rangnick’s appointment followed “a very well-founded and intensive process,” undertaken by the FA in appointing a suitable replacement to take over from Foda who had “a great international reputation” of clubs across the world.
