Premier League and EFL officials have stripped Russia of broadcasting rights to matches across their competitions.
This decision comes after several sporting organisations and teams in the past week cut ties or issued serious sanctions against Russian stars and businesses, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which is currently still ongoing.
In a short statement from the Premier League, they said: ‘The Premier League and its clubs today unanimously agreed to suspend our agreement with Russian broadcast partner Rambler (Okko Sport) with immediate effect and to donate £1million to support the people of Ukraine.’
The League strongly condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. We call for peace and our thoughts are with all those impacted.’
Premier League officials have also clarified that the £1m donation will be made to the Disasters Emergency Committee, which will deliver humanitarian aid to those in need of assistance.
EFL meanwhile issued their own statement, in which they said: ‘Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent humanitarian crisis that is unfolding in the region, the EFL has suspended the broadcast feeds of its matches in the Russian Federation.
Access to the EFL’s iFollow service and other Club streaming services have also been withdrawn in the territory.’
This means that Football TV won’t air EFL matches in Russia with immediate effect, whilst Match TV will also be stripped of broadcasting rights for Carabao Cup if the conflict continues ahead of the next edition of the tournament.
EFL went on to echo the thoughts expressed by the Premier League and other sporting organisations as they added that they remain ‘deeply concerned by the ongoing conflict.’
Last weekend, Premier League plus several EFL clubs showed their support for the people of Ukraine through a mixture of special captain armbands, ‘moment and of reflection and solidarity’ pre kick-off and messages stating ‘Football Stands Together’ on LED boards during the match itself.
