Manchester City again sit top of the Premier League following the latest round of action in which the relegation battle saw more twists.
Raheem Sterling became the first Manchester City player to deliver a hat-trick as he fired the Citizens to a 4-0 away win at third-bottom Norwich, with Phil Foden also adding his name to the scoresheet.
Fabinho smashed in a 40th minute winner from Sadio Mane’s flicked pass as Liverpool defeated rock-bottom Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor, which keeps Jurgen Klopp’s Reds nine points behind Man City in second.
Third-placed Chelsea again weren’t in domestic action due to their participation in the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup, where they emerged victorious 2-1 after extra time against Palmeiras to be crowned Club World Champions.
Che Adams cancelled out Jadon Sancho’s opener as Southampton fought back to draw 1-1 at Manchester United, although goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes in midweek against 10-men Brighton saw Man Utd manage to climb to fourth.
West Ham slipped to fifth as Craig Dawson’s injury-time equaliser saw the Hammers snatch a 2-2 draw at Leicester, having initially looked set for a 2-1 loss as goals from Ricardo Pereira and Youri Tielemans cancelled out Jarrod Bowen’s 10th minute opener.
Down in the relegation battle, Newcastle moved four points clear of the bottom three after Kieran Trippier’s 35th minute free-kick proved enough to beat Aston Villa 1-0 at St James’ Park.
Everton moved five points clear of the drop zone as Anthony Gordon provided an assist and goal in a 3-0 home win over Leeds United.
Watford now sit six points adrift of safety after losing 2-0 at home to Brighton as Neal Maupay and Adam Webster struck late in both halves respectively for the Seagulls.
Elsewhere, first half goals from Raul Jimenez and Leandro Dendoncker fired Wolves to a 2-0 away win at Tottenham, which saw them leapfrog Spurs into seventh and now mean that those sat between fourth and eighth are only separated by four points.
Finally, Brentford ended their six-match losing streak in all competitions as they held Crystal Palace to a goalless draw at home in a cross-London derby clash.
