Birmingham City have signed Teden Mengi on loan from Manchester United until end of 2021-22 season, after Dion Sanderson was recalled by Wolves.

Sanderson departs St Andrew’s with immediate effect after making 16 senior appearances in all competitions for the Blues, following a decision at Wolves to recall the 22 year-old defender due to a mixture of injuries and international call-ups.

Explaining the decision to recall Sanderson from his loan spell at Birmingham City, Wolves’ Technical Director – Scott Sellars revealed that this first-team chance “is a good opportunity” for Wolves “to have a good look at him.”

Sellars also acknowledged Birmingham City’s work in helping Sanderson’s progression, as he added: “For Dion to be playing week in, week out at Championship level has been fantastic for his development.”

Birmingham City have since immediately signed Mengi on loan from Man Utd as Sanderson’s replacement subject to league and FA clearance.

Feeling “delighted” to sign for Birmingham City on loan, Mengi has vowed to “kick on for the rest of the season.”

Explaining his decision to sign for the Blues, Mengi commented: “It was important for me to try and find what was best for me, which is here at Blues and to just kick on and get as many games under my belt and improve as much as I can as a player and as a person.”

Mengi isn’t the first Man Utd player to venture out on loan after Tahith Chong joined on loan earlier this season, although the latter is currently back at Utd for treatment on a serious groin injury.

Acknowledging Chong’s (nicknamed Chongy) experience at St Andrew’s, Mengi revealed that he “was straight on the phone to Chongy”, who informed him that the club and teammates are “great”.

Birmingham City have confirmed that Mengi will wear the number 18 shirt until end of season.

Mengi could make his Birmingham City bow on Saturday 8 January 2022 as the Blues host Plymouth Argyle in the Third Round of 2021-22 FA Cup.
