Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United have been drawn against Atletico Madrid in a controversial Round of 16 draw of 2021-22 UEFA Champions League.

Having initially first done the draw at 12:00pm CET, UEFA decided to void the draw due to technical software issues concerning the second and third ties drawn which involved Man Utd, so here are the original ties from the now voided draw.

  • Benfica v Real Madrid
  • Villarreal v Manchester City
  • Atletico Madrid v Bayern Munich
  • Red Bull Salzburg v Liverpool
  • Inter Milan v Ajax
  • Sporting Lisbon v Juventus
  • Chelsea v Lille
  • PSG v Manchester United

Upon completion of the re-draw, Chelsea’s clash against Lille was the only original tie to be redrawn as they meet for only the third and fourth times in their history, with the Blues having won both meetings in Group Stage of 2019-20 Champions League.

Manchester United meanwhile face another blockbuster tie as they now take on Atletico Madrid of whom they have failed to beat in two previous meetings in Second Round of 1991-92 European Cup Winners Cup.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City will meet Sporting Lisbon as the Citizens continue their bid to go one step better and win the competition, after finishing as runners-up last season.

Liverpool will face a difficult tie as they face 2020-21 Serie A winners, Inter Milan with the first leg away at San Siro, before hosting the Italian team at Anfield in the second leg.

PSG will face Real Madrid in a epic Last 16 tie as the 2019-20 runners-up look to cause a shock against the 13-time winners.

Bayern Munich will look to avoid a second exit in the Round of 16 in four season as they face Red Bull Salzburg.

Juventus look to avoid exiting the competition at this stage for a third consecutive season as they meet Villarreal for a place in the Quarter-Finals.

Benfica have been handed a kinder draw than they originally received as they will face Ajax who are looking to repeat their unexpected run to the semi-finals, having reached the last four in their last Champions League knockout appearance in 2018-19 season.

First legs will be held across the midweeks of 15-16 and 22-23 February 2022 with the second legs following in midweeks of 8-9 and 15-16 March.
