Leicester City have signed Ryan Bertrand from Southampton on a two-year contract until June 2023 on a free transfer.
Bertrand joins the Foxes after making 474 appearances in all competitions for Southampton, Chelsea and five other teams across his club career, of which 240 of those appearances came for Southampton in last seven seasons.
Speaking to LCFC.com on his decision to sign for Leicester, Bertrand said: “I’m really happy to be here; joining Leicester really complemented my inner ambitions and what I still want to achieve in my career.
“Leicester have built something amazing over the years, especially since Brendan Rodgers has come in. It’s fantastic to be a part of this fantastic club and I’m going to give my all to try and do the fans proud.”
Bertrand went on to speak of his excitement to link up with the playing squad and believes that “there is no better place to be,” than playing for the reigning FA Cup champions, who coincidentally defeated his first professional parent club – Chelsea to clinch the title in May.
The 31 year-old also praised Leicester for building a squad full of “professionalism”, “standards” plus “values that everyone shares and buys into.”
On what role he expects to play at Leicester, Bertrand revealed that he has already discussed tactics and philosophy with Rodgers but believes that he will be required to share his experiences on and off the pitch with younger players like Harvey Barnes, Hamza Choudhury and Luke Thomas.
Bertrand also spoke of his confidence that Leicester’s style of play fits his psychology, commenting: “The style of play that Brendan propagates is perfect for my mentality and how I approach the game.
“It’s one of the main reasons also. I look forward to implementing my style within that and getting more success.”
Leicester will again participate in the UEFA Europa League after finishing fifth on the final day of 2020-21 Premier League season following defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, with Bertrand believing that playing European football “is a fantastic goal for a professional footballer” and hopes to deliver in the competition.
Bertrand is Leicester’s third first-team signing after Patson Daka and Boubakary Soumare signed for the club in recent weeks.
