Wales meet Denmark at Johan Cruyff Arena, Amsterdam, Netherlands in the opening match of the Round of 16.
Rob Page’s Welsh Dragons advanced this stage by finishing runners-up in Group A whilst Denmark likewise finished as Group B runners-up with a 4-1 win over Russia after losing their first two group matches.
The winners of this encounter will meet either Netherlands or Czech Republic in the Quarter-Finals on Saturday 3 July 2021 in Baku.
Team News
Ethan Ampadu is Wales’ only absentee after being red-carded in their defeat to Italy in their final Group A match last Sunday.
Page however could revert to a 4-5-1 formation used in Wales’ first two matches with Kieffer Moore set to return as the lone striker up front.
Denmark have no fresh injury concerns to report with a full squad in contention, minus Christian Eriksen who was withdrawn following a cardiac arrest in their opening defeat to Finland.
Stat Attack
- This is Wales first-ever meeting against Denmark at a major tournament.
- Wales have won four of ten previous meetings against Denmark in all competitions (W4, L6).
- Denmark have won and lost two of four previous clashes against Wales when playing as the away’ team (W2, L2), scoring twice in three of those four games.
- Wales have kept four clean sheets in eight matches across all competitions in 2021 (W3, D2, L3).
- Two of Denmark’s five Euro goals this tournament has been scored by Yussuf Poulsen.
Prediction
Although they failed to top Group A after suffering defeat to Italy in Rome, Wales will probably be happy with how they performed because they certainly showed excellent discipline to keep the result respectable even after Ampadu’s red card.
Denmark meanwhile finally found their spark when they needed it most with a clinical yet ruthless performance against Russia in their final Group B match, having slowly grown into the tournament so I am expecting them to come here looking to progress further with their attack-minded game.
Wales therefore need to be super disciplined defensively and take their chances because otherwise, I can see Denmark claiming another big result, which will be of excellent credit after their difficult start to the tournament.
Prediction: Wales 1-2 Denmark
Result: Wales 0-4 Denmark
