Derek Adams has resigned as Morecambe manager in order ‘to pursue an opportunity elsewhere’ just days after guiding the club to promotion to League One.
It is thought that Adams has departed for League Two rivals, Bradford City just days after guiding Morecambe to League One with a controversial 1-0 win over Newport County in the Play-Off Final at Wembley Stadium.
Morecambe Co-Chairmen, Rod Taylor and Graham Howse have released a joint statement discussing Adams’ exit and future plans.
Taylor paid tribute to Adams for delivering a ‘fantastic job’ since arriving at the Shrimps in early November 2019 in not only guiding the club to promotion to the third tier of English Football for the first time but also serving ‘as a positive catalyst for positive change’ within the club in terms of ambitions.
On behalf of everyone at Morecambe Football Club, Taylor placed on record their thanks to Adams and wish him the best for his future, whilst also iterating that the club itself will move ‘decisively’ to appoint a new manager who can build on promotion and the opportunities created for both club and community with an ‘ambitious vision and strategy’.
Howse meanwhile spoke of feeling ‘absolutely confident’ in recruiting a manager who can continue to push the club forward both on and off the pitch and advance player development, whilst ensuring that the club’s football operations are run in an ‘effectively and efficiently’ undertaken manner.
Although the timing isn’t ideal, Howse though is looking ahead to the future, commenting: “This change and the timing of it presents a challenge, Morecambe Football Club will rise to that challenge and is relishing the test that awaits in League One.”
In 79 matches as Morecambe manager across all competitions, Adams have avoided defeat in 52 of his games in charge with a 43% win rate.
