Brentford have signed 18-year-old midfielder, Darwin Guagua from Independiente del Valle for an undisclosed transfer fee.
Guagua’s move to the Bees comes after two successful breakthrough seasons at Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle, where he has scored four goals and created two assists in 33 appearances since his debut in April 2025 as a substitute against Cuenca in Ecuadorian Serie A.
His performances consequently attracted reported interest from several European clubs including Brighton, Chelsea, Sunderland and Birmingham, with the latter having came close to signing the youngster before Brentford swooped in to sign him.
Guagua has signed a five-year contract until June 2031 but the Bees hold a club option to extend for a further year.
Subject to obtaining a work visa, Guagua will spend the season at Spanish third-tier club, Merida AD in order to continue his development.
Brentford’s Technical Director, Lee Dykes is “delighted” to sign Guagua and explained that the decision to send him on loan to Merida AD is down to the fact he is already playing first-team football.
“We are delighted with the signing of Darwin. We are always looking for high-potential young players that we believe can develop into future Brentford players.
“Darwin shows some positive early attributes that we like. As he is already playing senior football for club and country, it has been agreed that he will spend the season ahead out on loan to continue his development.”
Guagua represents Ecuador at international level and was controversially called up for the senior team in March 2025 before he had even made his professional debut at club level, and made his debut that month in a 0-0 draw against Chile.
The 18-year-old has now earned two senior caps for Ecuador after he made his second international appearance in late May 2026 in a 2-1 friendly victory against Saudi Arabia, but was left out of the squad that reached the Round of 32 at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
