Arsenal have announced that nine players across the men and women’s team will be released at the end of 2020-21 season.
Defender, David Luiz is the only permanent signing in the men’s senior squad to be released at the end of this season, with Martin Odegaard and Dani Ceballos returning to Real Madrid and Matt Ryan heading back to Brighton & Hove Albion following completion of their loan deals.
Luiz’s departure comes after just two seasons at the Gunners following his move from London rivals – Chelsea, with the Brazilian scoring four goals in 73 appearances across all competitions.
Ceballos will also depart after two seasons on loan at Arsenal in which he only produced two goals in 77 club appearances across all competitions, as the Gunners finished eighth this season and missed out on Europe altogether for the first time since failing to achieve European qualification in 1994-95 season.
Odegaard only joined the club on loan in late January and only mustered two goals in 14 appearances across Premier League and Europa League, whilst Matt Ryan only made three league appearances in his loan spell as back-up to Bernd Leno.
Across in the senior Arsenal Women squad, Leonie Maier is the only departure after making just 36 appearances in all competitions with no goals.
Arsenal also confirmed that Joseph Olowu is the only player in their Under-23 squad to be released alongside Under 18 trio of Levi Laing, Luke Plange and Jason Sraha, with Plange having already signed with Derby County ahead of his release.
The club have also confirmed that further developments concerning contract extensions, returns and departures will be announced in due course once officially finalised.
In a club statement, Arsenal thanked all nine departing players ‘for their contributions’ throughout their time at the club and iterated that they are to ‘always be part of the Arsenal family’ and wish them well for their futures.
