Chelsea Women have signed Aniek Nouwen from PSV Eindhoven on a three-season deal until June 2024.
This move marks Chelsea Women’s first signing of the summer transfer window with Nouwen signing a pre-contract agreement on a three year deal, which will see her join Emma Hayes’ Blues next season.
Speaking on her decision to sign for Chelsea, Nouwen said; “There were other clubs who were interested, but I made my decision to join Chelsea pretty fast!”
With the Women’s Super League (WSL) enjoying a spell of big-name signings like Sam Kerr and Sam Mewis, Nouwen admitted that playing in the WSL has been a “dream” for her in her quest to “… develop even more.”
On joining two-time reigning champions, Chelsea, Nouwen said; “I’m very honoured and proud to become a Blue and I can’t wait to be a part of this winning team. I want to win prizes and play in the big games.
“I’m looking forward to joining up with the team, it’s all going to be very new but I’m really excited.”
Speaking on her latest recruit, Hayes described Nouwen as “… an exciting addition to our squad.”
Acknowledging Nouwen’s “wealth of experience” across club and international football at just 22 years-old, Hayes added that she expects Nouwen’s composure on the ball and physicality to suit the WSL.
On how she views Nouwen amongst many young defenders across the world, Hayes commented; “I have no doubt Aniek is one of the best young defenders in the world and has a very bright future ahead of her with us.”
Chelsea are now preparing for their maiden appearance in Sunday’s (16 May) UEFA Women’s Champions League Final, as they meet Barcelona in Gothenburg.
Nouwen meanwhile is hoping to be part of Sarina Wiegman’s Netherlands Olympics squad, as the latter manages the Dutch team for the final time ahead of her move to England to become the new Lionesses manager as agreed last August.
