Japanese Grand Prix to Remain on F1 Calendar Until 2024

Formula One has announced a three year extension for the Japanese Grand Prix, keeping the iconic race on the calendar until the end of 2024.

Suzuka will continue to be the home of the Japanese GP as it has been since 2009, following a 20 year spell from 1987-2006 before the race returned to Fuji Speedway for two season across 2007-08 after previously hosting the race from 1976-77 seasons.

2020 however saw the race fail to go ahead as a result of travel restrictions caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking on the decision to renew the Japanese GP for three further seasons F1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali said; “I am truly delighted that Formula 1 will continue to race at Suzuka Circuit for another three years.”

Domenicali also spoke of Suzuka being a firm favourite full of historic moments, adding; “Japan holds a special place in the hearts and minds of F1 fans all over the world, and Suzuka has played host to many of the sport’s most legendary moments, with 11 Drivers’ titles being decided there.”

This deal also marks the latest step in F1’s commitment to grow the sport in Asian markets, as evidenced by Yuki Tsunoda’s graduation to F1 to become the first Japanese driver to race in the sport since Kamui Kobayashi in 2014.

Mobilityland Corporation President Representative Director, Kaoru Tanaka has expressed “sincere gratitude” to F1 for their commitment to extending the Japanese Grand Prix for three further seasons.

Tanaka has also confirmed that Mobilityland will continue to work with local residents of Mie Prefecture and Suzuka City to ensure that the circuit will continue to “… contribute to the prosperity of the motorsports culture.”

2022 will see Suzuka celebrate 60 years since the circuit first opened and Tanaka has revealed that there will be new challenges for the future whilst “cherishing the history and traditions” of motorsport.

2021 Japanese Grand Prix is scheduled to take place across 8-10 October , subject to suitable lifting of restrictions by Japanese Government.
