2020-21 Premier League: Week 26 – Sheffield United vs Liverpool

Sheffield United welcome Liverpool to Bramall Lane in Super Sunday Night Football from the Premier League.

Victory will reduce Sheffield Utd’s deficit in their relegation fight despite staying rock-bottom, whereas Liverpool will stay sixth with a result no matter what happens earlier in the day.

Chris Basham is ruled out for Sheffield Utd with a muscle injury.

Lys Mousset (knock), Jack Rodwell, Jayden Bogle (both unspecified), John Egan (ankle), Sander Berge (hamstring), Jack Robinson (unspecified) and Jack O’Connell (knee) are all ruled out.

Liverpool will be without Jordan Henderson until after Easter after the England international needed surgery on an adductor injury.

Diogo Jota (knee) could be in contention following a lengthy absence, but James Milner (hamstring) and Fabinho (muscle) are still ruled out despite looking set to return to training over the weekend.

Joel Matip (ankle), Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk (both knee) remain absent.

Stat Attack

  • Sheffield Utd have taken just one point from their last five Premier League meetings against Liverpool (D1, L4).
  • Liverpool have won just one of four previous Premier League trips to Bramall Lane (W1, D2, L1).
  • Only one of Liverpool’s five goals in their last three meetings with Sheffield United didn’t come from a forward – Georginio Wijnaldum – September 2019 at Bramall Lane in a 1-0 away win.
  • Just two of Sheffield Utd’s nine home goals in the Premier League this season has come in the first half.
  • Liverpool haven’t lost five consecutive league games in a top-flight season since August-September 1953.

Prediction

Having delivered a lacklustre performance at Fulham last weekend which all but sealed their relegation because they rarely posed any issues up front, yet defended deep with Aaron Ramsdale often saving their skin on several occasions.

Liverpool meanwhile aren’t in impressive form themselves with multiple injuries and with Jordan Henderson now out, they simply will be relieved to be facing the basement club otherwise a fifth consecutive league defeat would be highly likely in my opinion.

I therefore am not expecting a thriller by any stretch here because both teams do have work to do but Liverpool’s attack should be capable of finding a routine win by hook or crook if can find their end product, otherwise just finishing in the top seven will be a relief for Jurgen Klopp.

Prediction: Sheffield United 0-1 Liverpool

Result: Sheffield United 0-2 Liverpool
