2020-21 Premier League: Week 24 – West Brom vs Manchester United

West Bromwich Albion face a difficult test as they host Manchester United at The Hawthorns on Super Sunday. 

Victory will move Sam Allardyce’s Baggies to within ten points of safety, whereas Man Utd look to reclaim second from Leicester with a win and reduce their deficit to leaders – Man City to five points.

Grady Diangana is West Brom’s only injury concern as he continue to struggle with a hamstring injury, although he could feature in the matchday squad if he passes a late fitness test.

Man Utd have no fresh injury concerns to report as Eric Bailly is in contention to return after overcoming a knock that kept him out of their last two games.

Paul Pogba (muscle) and Phil Jones (knee) remain absent.

• West Brom have taken just four points from their last five league meetings against Manchester United (W1, D1, L3).
• Man Utd have taken ten points from their last five league visits to West Brom (W3, D1, L1).
• West Brom have missed their only penalty kick against Man Utd in 25 previous Premier League meetings.
• Edinson Cavani has scored in two consecutive league games for the first time since August 2019, when he was playing for PSG at the time, prior to his free transfer move to Utd in October 2020.
• Karlan Grant has been substituted on more occasions than any other West Brom player this season in the Premier League, having been benched on 13 occasions.

 

Prediction

West Brom will be slightly disappointed to not walk away from Tottenham last weekend with a point but despite defending well, they lacked any end product to their attacks so will certainly be looking to threaten more if they can.

Man Utd meanwhile were a defensive mess at times against Everton in a dramatic draw but were more solid in midweek FA Cup action, albeit lacking sharpness up front despite naming a strong attacking line-up so will be looking for a better performance here.

This though does look like a game which Utd should win if they are at their best because West Brom just seem to find themselves exposed when on the attack, which is where Utd should be able to hit them hard and get the three points.
