HWA Racelab have announced that Alessio Deledda and Matteo Nannini will race for the team in Formula Two for 2021 season.
Nannini participated in F2 post-season test in December in Bahrain and having signed to the team for their F3 campaign, the Italian will now also drive in the 2021 F2 season meaning that he will be contesting 45 races this year across both series following a change in race weekend format.
Speaking on his decision to contest both series for HWA Racelab, Nannini said; “I am really looking forward to such a busy season! 45 races in 2021 are going to be demanding, but I feel ready and determined to grow as a driver, having the opportunity to race in both FIA F2 and F3. It will be my first year in Formula 2.”
Nannini however has admitted that he knows this F2 season “will not be easy, but I am willing to learn as much as possible.”
2021 meanwhile will be Nannini’s second consecutive F3 season after taking a third-placed finish second Spanish race last season, with the Italian feeling “confident” that HWA Racelab can provide a car that enables him to do well.
The 17 year-old has also spoken of his belief in HWA’s F1 Talent Factory Programme, believing that his “double commitment will be key” in moving him closer towards earning a F1 drive within the near future.
Speaking on his decision to step up to F2, Deledda said; “FIA Formula 2 is a new experience that I have been waiting for years. I am excited to be participating in such a competitive championship and testing my skills.
“I am sure that, together with a team rich in experience like HWA, we will be able to grow together on this journey that awaits us.”
HWA Racelab Team Principal, Thomas Strick has spoken of this driver lineup representing a “good mix” of youth in Nannini and experience in Deledda.
Strick however admitted that fielding Nannini in both series is a “conscious decision” although he feels that Nannini could benefit from the experience, saying; “The advantage for the young driver is that he can be introduced more quickly to the high performance of a Formula 1 car, as the Formula 2 car comes far closer to matching this performance.”
