Yuki Tsunoda will drive for AlphaTauri at the post-season Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi on 15 December 2020.

Tsunoda finished third in Formula Two this season which saw him claim the Anthoine Hubert Award for finishing as the highest placed rookie and has consequently earned the Japanese driver a drive at AlphaTauri for the Young Driver test on 15 December at Yas Marina circuit.

Speaking on his latest opportunity, Tsunoda said; “I am really looking forward to testing with Scuderia AlphaTauri.”

This however won’t be Tsunoda’s first time in a F1 car after testing for the team in Imola last month after the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, where he completed over 350 kilometres in wet conditions.

Tsunoda however has one particular focus for this test, saying; “During the session, my focus will be on following the team’s instructions and giving my feedback to the engineers.

“It will also be a chance for me to learn as much as possible and help my own personal development.”

AlphaTauri Team Principal, Franz Tost described Tsunoda as a “fast learner” who can adapt quickly and improve with every lap inside the car and on expectations, Tost said; “I’m convinced he will make a good step forward having a full day in the car, and this time he will be driving the AT01, so his feedback will be even more valuable for our engineers.”

This opportunity comes just days after Tsunoda won the F2 Sakhir Feature before claiming second in the Sprint in a Carlin one-two finish as he ultimately finished third in the standings to claim his FIA Super license for a potential move into F1 next season with AlphaTauri, replacing Daniil Kvyat who is set to leave the team after Abu Dhabi.

Confirmation of Tsunoda’s participation comes just days after Renault controversially confirmed that Fernando Alonso will share driving duties with their rookie, Guanyu Zhou at the post-season test.
