Burnley welcome Sheffield United to Turf Moor in the only all Premier League tie in Second Round of this season’s Carabao Cup.
This match marks Burnley’s first game of 2020-21 season after their opening league match was postponed, with the winner set to visit Millwall at The Den in the Third Round.
Burnley will be without Jack Cork (ankle), Ben Mee (thigh) and Ashley Barnes (fitness) for their first match of 2020-21 season, as the trio continue to recover from injuries suffered last season.
Sheffield Utd could welcome Simon Moore back from a broken finger injury but Lys Mousset is absent after needing surgery on a toe ligament injury.
- Burnley lost their only previous League Cup against Sheffield United, losing 2-0 at Bramall Lane in October 1966.
- Sheffield Utd have won two of their last five trips to Turf Moor in all competitions (W2, D1, L2).
- Each of the Blades’ last four goals in this fixture were all scored by players with the first name of ‘John’ with Egan scoring an equaliser here in July, whilst Fleck scored once and Lundstram collected a brace in first meeting at Bramall Lane last season.
It is hard to know what to expect from Burnley who don’t have a competitive game under their belt and have lost one of their influential midfielders in Jeff Hendrick, yet will come into this match fresher than Sheffield Utd who clearly have defensive improvement to make.
This in therefore going to either be a good open match between two middling teams or Burnley will make their freshness count, especially early on if the Blades begin like they did on Monday with poor man marking against Wolves which cost them the match.
If it’s a case of latter then expect a routine Clarets win, otherwise I can see the Blades making a game of this and possibly getting the win on penalties if can avoid a disastrous start that they gave themselves on Monday again.
Prediction: Burnley 1-1 Sheffield United (Sheffield United to win on penalties)
Result: Burnley 1-1 Sheffield United (Burnley wins 5-4 on penalties)
