2019-20 FA Cup: Fourth Round Replays – Wednesday

Tottenham Hotspur welcome Southampton to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to settle their Fourth Round tie in this season’s FA Cup.

Southampton snatched a late 1-1 draw in the original tie at St Mary’s to secure this replay, with a home tie against Norwich awaiting the winners in the Fifth Round.

Dele Alli is a doubt for Tottenham Hotspur after picking up a knock to his ankle in Sunday’s Premier League win over Manchester City.

Ben Davies (ankle), Moussa Sissoko (knee) and Harry Kane (hamstring) are ruled out.

Southampton could have Yan Valery available after the Frenchman missed the last month and a half with a viral infection.

Stuart Armstrong however is their only definite absentee with a groin injury.

Stat Attack

  • Tottenham have won just three of ten previous FA Cup matches against Southampton (W3, D4. L3).
  • Both teams have won one of two previous FA Cup ties which have gone to replays, although Southampton’s win came after a second replay in 1902-03 season after a 2-2 draw in first replay.
  • Three of four previous FA Cup ties in this fixture at Tottenham’s ground has seen both teams score, with the exception being a 1-0 home win in January 1983.

Prediction

Tottenham have to fancy their chances here because they were simply brilliant against Manchester City on Sunday, especially with a clean sheet which will lift confidence because Southampton will pose another defensive test.

Southampton however will be keen to make amends for their second-half defensive mess in Saturday’s defeat at Liverpool, so I am expecting  to see a tighter yet more clinical display here.

I therefore am expecting a good game full of chances given that just one of the last ten games has failed to see both teams score, although I can’t see Southampton doing enough to progress beyond this stage simply on quality.

Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Southampton

Result: Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 Southampton
