Williams have announced Jack Aitken as their new reserve driver for the 2020 Formula One season.

Upon confirmation of the announcement, Team Principal, Claire Williams revealed that ‘we believe he has the right credentials to reach the top in the sport.’

The announcement comes a day after Aitken announced his departure from Renault, where he graduated through their academy before becoming their Test and Reserve Driver lasts season.

As part of his reserve duties for Williams, Aitken will attend every race weekend whilst conducting simulator work between race weekends, and will replace George Russell or Nicholas Latifi if either race driver can’t participate in a race weekend due to unforeseen circumstances.

Williams have also confirmed that Aitken will make his F1 debut in a Free Practice One session during the season, which could well be the British Grand Prix in July given that their last British reserve driver – Susie Wolff made her F1 bow at Silverstone in July 2014.

Speaking of his decision to join Williams, Aitken said; “It is a great honour to join ROKIT Williams Racing as their Reserve Driver for the 2020 season. Williams is a team with strong heritage, and continued longevity, and I’m looking forward to directly contributing to their development through my simulator and testing work.”
