2019-20 Sky Bet Championship: Week 24 Roundup

West Bromwich Albion remain top of the Sky Bet Championship after a blockbuster round of Boxing Day fixtures. 

Filip Krovinovic put the Baggies in front when he fired in from a poor clearance by Samuel Sahin-Radlinger, which they controlled until Aapo Halme rescued Barnsley a point with a 90th minute strike from Conor Chaplin’s cross as the Tykes slipped to third-bottom.

Leeds remain three points behind in second after Stuart Dallas’ late strike earned them a valuable point, having fallen behind to Alan Browne’s opener for Preston who slid to sixth.

Brentford climbed to third after dispatching Swansea in their final Boxing Day match at Griffin Park, ahead of their move to the Brentford Community Stadium next season. 

Strikes from Bryan Mbeumo and Ollie Watkins in seven first-half minutes had the Bees in control, until Andre Ayew played an one-two with Bersant Celina from a long ball before slotting in to half the Swans’ deficit midway through second half. 

Watkins then completed his brace with a brilliantly composed slot in on the counter-attack, sealing the win as Brentford ended their final festive season at Griffin Park on a high.

Sheffield Wednesday slipped to fourth after coming from behind to lead Stoke, only to then concede twice in injury time, which was enough to lift the Potters out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

Luton therefore into the bottom three after blowing one goal lead on three separate occasions to draw 3-3 with fifth-placed Fulham at Kenilworth Road. 

Wigan slipped down to rock-bottom after Martyn Waghorn rescued Derby a point after Joe Garner had initially put the Latics ahead. 

Nottingham Forest complete the top seven after Lewis Grabban’s brace proved enough to edge past Hull.

Elsewhere, Charlton ended a 11 game winless run as Macauley Bonne netted a brace and set up Alfie Doughty’s late winner to beat Bristol City 3-2.

Djed Spence’s first professional goal proved enough for Middlesbrough to edge past Huddersfield and make it three consecutive home wins.

Millwall haunted their former manager – Neil Harris as Jed Wallace’s spectacular free-kick saw them snatch a point at Cardiff, having briefly fallen behind to Aiden Flint’s tap-in from a corner kick.

Reading are now unbeaten in their last four games after John Swift’s 53rd minute half volley proved the difference in a tight encounter against QPR. 

Finally, Birmingham City and Blackburn shared the post Christmas spoils as Kerim Mrabti’s penalty rescued the Brummies a point, having initially fallen behind to Adam Armstrong’s penalty for Rovers.
