Liverpool moved top after a thrilling weekend of action saw various shifts in the table, after early pacesetters, Manchester City and Manchester United both slipped up.
Goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino sent Liverpool top on Saturday teatime, despite a poor Adrian clearance allowing Danny Ings to net a consolation goal for Southampton late on.
Manchester City therefore headed into their clash with Tottenham knowing that victory would return them to top spot.
Things got off to a great off when Raheem Sterling headed in Kevin De Bruyne’s cross at the back post after 20 minutes, only for Erik Lamela to go straight up the other end three minutes later and bend in beyond a powerless Ederson to restore parity.
Sergio Aguero then restored City’s lead 11 minutes later with a flick in from De Bruyne’s pass but second half super sub, Lucas Moura ensured that Spurs once again pegged the Citizens back with a bullet header from a corner in an eventual 2-2 draw.
Embed from Getty ImagesThat meant that United could go top for the first time since September 2017 with a win over Wolves but were instead held to a 1-1 draw as Ruben Neves’ second half volley cancelled out Anthony Martial’s 27th minute opener.
Those two draws therefore allowed Arsenal to leapfrog both Manchester clubs into second, having beaten Burnley 2-1 on Saturday lunchtime through strikes from Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Brighton meanwhile sit fifth after Leandro Trossard’s equaliser earned the Seagulls a 1-1 draw with West Ham, who initially led for four minutes through Javier Hernandez.
Bournemouth also continued their unbeaten start to the season after taking a 2-1 win over Aston Villa through a Josh King penalty and Harry Wilson screamer, although Douglas Luiz halved the Villains’ deflict with an excellent second half consolation volley.
Embed from Getty ImagesElsewhere, Teemu Pukki scored his first Premier League hat-trick and the first hat-trick of the new season as Norwich saw off Newcastle 3-1, despite Jonjo Shelvey lashing in a late injury-time consolation goal for the Magpies.
Sheffield United and Everton both won their opening games of the season through respective winners from John Lundstram and Bernard against Crystal Palace and Watford, which saw the Hornets fall to rock-bottom of the table.
Finally, Frank Lampard’s homecoming at Chelsea didn’t go to plan as Wilfred Ndidi’s second half header earned Leicester a point, having initially gifted Mason Mount his first Premier League goal after just seven minutes.
