2019-20 Sky Bet Championship: Week Four – Tuesday

Jonathan Woodgate is still searching for his first win as Middlesbrough manager as the Teessiders take on Wigan at the Riverside Stadium in Tuesday’s big Championship match.

Boro currently sit third bottom and victory here will see them leapfrog above Wigan, who could slip into the relegation zone come 10pm Wednesday night.

Middlesbrough have no fresh injury concerns to report after suffering defeat at Blackburn on Saturday, although Jonathan Woodgate could again rotate his squad.

Dael Fry and Rudy Gestede are still sidelined with hamstring injuries alongside Hayden Coulson, who is nursing a thigh injury.

Wigan are without the suspended Joe Williams after he was sent off against Leeds on Saturday.

Joe Garner (hamstring), Josh Windass (calf), Anthony Pilkington (quad) and Joe Gelhardt (hamstring) are all ruled out for the Latics.

Form

Boro are winless after losing their last two league matches since playing out a thrilling opening day 3-3 draw against Luton.

Wigan meanwhile won their opening game against Cardiff but have lost their last three matches in all competitions without scoring, conceding six goals in the process.

Stat Attack

  • Middlesbrough are unbeaten in their last five league meetings with Wigan (W2, D3).
  • Wigan have won just one of eight meetings in all competitions at the Riverside Stadium, taking a 3-2 victory in January 2006 in their first Premier League clash.
  • Three of four goalless draws between these teams have come at the Riverside Stadium.

Prediction

This should be an interesting match because Boro do know how to score but lack that clinical touch to win games, whilst Wigan don’t seem to have improved much and have a worrying injury crisis in attack.

I therefore wouldn’t be surprised if we see a goalless draw here but given the Latics’ defensive woes, this should be a home win but I don’t expect it to be a particularly impressive result by Boro’s standards.

Prediction: Middlesbrough 1-0 Wigan Athletic

Result: Middlesbrough 1-0 Wigan Athletic
