Fleetwood Head Coach, Matt Lawlor has iterated that his team are “full steam ahead” after Carabao Cup cupset over Arsenal.

Lawlor’s Cod Army stunned Mikel Arteta’s Premier League champions on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Highbury on Tuesday evening (27 October), in which Aaron Loupalo-Bi’s shock opening goal for Fleetwood was cancelled out by Viktor Gyokeres’ equaliser for last season’s runners-up.

Fleetwood now turn their focus to a home clash against Bristol Rovers as they seek to end their run of one win in eight league matches, with Lawlor keen to iterate that focus is solely on the League Two encounter in his pre-match press conference.

“It’s an amazing feeling still, for everyone connected with the Club and what we achieved,” explained Lawlor. “But it’s full steam ahead in terms of Bristol Rovers. Hopefully an amazing night on Tuesday will lead to an amazing day on Saturday.

“The league is our priority. I said that from 23 June. For me, a win on Saturday is paramount because it’s the next game. Three points is what we always want to achieve at home.”

Fleetwood currently sit 18th in League Two on 14 points and just two points behind Bristol Rovers in 15th position, with Lawlor anticipating a difficult test.

“They’ve got a squad full of proper talent, well drilled, experienced boys,” continued Lawlor. “They’re a physical team, capable of getting about the pitch and competing for a massive proportion of the game.

“It’s a completely different task to Tuesday in terms of style, and we’re looking forward to it.”
