Adam Wharton has blasted Crystal Palace for a 5-0 “disaster” defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Jaydee Canvot’s headed own-goal in the fourth-minute set in motion a disastrous away defeat at Brighton as Diego Gomez and Yasin Ayari added further goals within six further minutes, before Charalampos Kostoulas and Jack Hinshelwood sealed the embarrassing result in the second half.

The loss left Palace sat 14th in the Premier League.

“I don’t think we could have started any worse to be honest,” reflected Wharton to cpfc.co.uk as he slammed the performance of himself and his teammates. “It was nowhere near enough… from every single one of us.

“When you put yourself in that position, it’s never going to be easy. They’re a team in form, they have good players, we made it very difficult for ourselves from the first minute.”

Wharton specifically pin-pointed their start as their costly downfall as he criticised the lack of pace and desire.

“We were too slow from the start. They were getting second balls, first balls and winning duels.

“They get the early goal from the free kick and they’ve got momentum and then they get another two quickly. When you concede one early you’ve got to tie it up, and you can’t concede another.

“Three was just a disaster. We can’t allow that to happen and it did today.”

Palace now turn their attention to their Europa League trip to Besiktas on Thursday 22 October at 8pm BST, and Wharton believes that his team can’t afford to sulk about the display too long if they’re to produce a response in Turkey.

“We’ve just got to analyse it and look at everything we can do to get better,” iterated Wharton on the need to shake down the frustrating defeat and reset for Thursday’s match to give fans renewed confidence in the team.

“We can’t dwell on it for too long. It’s terrible.

“The fans deserve better. This club can’t be having a result like this. We need to work hard, focus, and put it right in the next game.”
