Alessia Russo has hailed England’s “ruthless” 5-0 victory over Greece to set up a 2027 FIFA World Cup Qualifying second round play-off against Ukraine.

Russo’s brace alongside two goals from Lauren James and Georgia Stanway’s header saw England cruise past Greece to a 5-0 second-leg win at home and 8-1 on aggregate.

“Obviously, we were happy with the first game with getting the win but there were some things we wanted to work on, and I think we saw that tonight,” explained Russo on the team’s performance and improvement as Lexi Potter and Freya Godfrey made their senior international debuts.

“We were ruthless early on, and it was nice for another couple more girls to get their debuts, too.

“It’s nice to get on the scoresheet as always. Nice to have two wins under our belt and now we’re going into the next round of games.”

Russo in particular had praise for Potter who she thought produced a “brilliant” performance as she spoke of the 20-year-old’s displays in training and desire to learn – especially off her fellow Chelsea teammate, Keira Walsh.

“In training, straight away you could tell she’s ready for this level.

“First and foremost, she’s a great kid, she wants to learn and I think she’s got the best in learning off Keira.

“That’s great and then she takes her moment tonight. She looks so confident, so composed and I’m very happy she’s an England player.”
