Lexi Potter is proud of a “really special” senior debut for England in a 5-0 second-leg victory over Greece in their 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying first round playoff tie.
Braces from Alessia Russo and Lauren James plus Georgia Stanway’s header saw England beat Greece 5-0 in the second leg at the King Power Stadium, Leicester, which sealed a 8-1 aggregate victory after they had initially claimed a 3-1 away first-leg win.
Potter though was one of two changes for the home leg for her maiden start at international senior level and played the first hour before she was replaced by Jess Park.
“It was really special,” reflected the 20-year-old to ITV post match and admitted to having suffered nerves prior to kick-off but was pleased to have achieved a childhood ambition.
“I was obviously very happy. I was a little bit nervous, but once we got on the pitch and started playing, I really enjoyed it.
“When you’re a young girl, it’s what you dream of playing for your country and to get my debut and then to be able to start as well. It was a really special moment I’ll always remember.”
Potter was joined by Chelsea teammates, Hannah Hampton, Keira Walsh and Lauren James in the line-up, which brought familiarity and Walsh in particular was pleased to see her club teammate get her first taste of international football and the youngster was glad to have her alongside herself in midfield.
“She was really happy for me and I think having a player like her, obviously, at club and then being able to have her at country as well is really special.
“I’m really grateful for her. She makes me feel confident all the time and to play alongside her, I really enjoy it.
“I feel like there’s more to come. It took a bit of time to grow into the game, but I felt like once I did, it was better and definitely more to come.”
