Austrian defender, Kevin Danso has joined Sunderland on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur.
Danso’s move to Wearside came just days after he asked Tottenham to let him leave the club just 19 months after he joined the North London club from France’s Lens.
Spurs however have included a £22m obligation to buy fee in the 27-year-old’s loan switch, which could be activated next summer, with Danso excited to make his loan move to Wearside given his link to their Director of Football – Florent Ghisolfi.

“Sunderland is a big club with huge ambition, and I’m excited to be part of what we’re building this season.
“I know Florent well from our time together at Lens, so that was an important factor in my decision. I’m looking forward to working with him again, meeting my new team-mates and experiencing the atmosphere at the Stadium of Light.”
Ghisolfi added: “Kevin is a player I know very well from my time working with him at RC Lens,” he said.
“He will bring strength, character and know-how to the squad, and vast experience of playing in domestic and European competitions.
“We’re thrilled to add him to the squad for a historic season in Sunderland AFC’s history.”
Born in Voltsberg, Austria, Danso began his career in Reading’s youth academy as a striker before he joined MK Dons then Augsburg, where he scored three goals in 44 senior appearances following his first-team breakthrough in March 2017.
He however spent 2019-20 and 20-21 seasons on loan at Southampton and Fortuna Dusseldorf respectively with two goals in 43 combined appearances, of which both goals came at Dusseldorf.
His performances at Dusseldorf also led him to join Lens in August 2021 in a three-and-a-half year spell in which he scored four goals in 126 appearances.
February 2025 saw Spurs sign him and just three months later, he was part of their title-winning UEFA Europa League squad as he made 15 appearances in the second half of the 2024-25 season, before he went on to make 35 appearances last season.
His final appearance in a Tottenham shirt came in their 5-1 second-round victory at home against London rivals, Charlton last week, in which he scored their third goal.
